Roundhouse
Railroad Museum 0.4 km/0.3 miles :
The story of the Roundhouse Railroad Museum is
the story of industry and how it shaped Savannah
and Georgia. When the complex was begun in the
1830s as the Central of Georgia Railway headquarters
and repair shops, its design was revolutionary,
combining all the railroad's cutting-edge facilities
in one place.
More than 40,000 visitors each year stroll through
exhibits inside seven historic railroad structures
and see our growing collection of locomotives
and rolling stock. Our interpretive displays include
a large model train layout of Savannah as well
as exhibits explaining steam engines and belt-driven
machinery. |

Telfair
Academy of Arts and Science 0.5 km/0.3 miles:
The Telfair Museum of Art, located in the historic
district of Savannah, Georgia, is the South’s
first public art museum. Established in 1875,
the Telfair Academy includes the original Telfair
Mansion designed by English architect William
Jay.
The interior spaces are highlighted by the Octagon
and Dining Room, representing period rooms of
the early 19th century. These period rooms provide
a splendid setting for the Museum's decorative
arts collection, including American European objects
from 1790-1840. The core of this collection is
the Telfair family legacy, including a rare Philadelphia
suite of maple furniture and an unusual dining
table with two sets of semi-circular leaves commissioned
by Thomas Cook of Philadelphia.
